Common Ground with Blue Star Families

On Nov. 17, the Vista Outdoor Foundation announced its 2021 Grant Partners. The Foundation’s Board of Directors chose ten organizations that promote conservation, encourage youth and veteran participation in outdoor sports, and work to improve diversity and inclusion in the outdoors. The recipients received over $600,000 in grant funding.

Now, we’re doing a deep dive into the organization so our employees and external stakeholders can learn more about the Foundation’s partners, their missions and how they put their grant to use. This month’s Common Ground feature highlights Blue Star Families.

Why Blue Star Families?
Blue Star Families empowers all-volunteer military and their families to thrive as they serve. The organization works to strengthen military families by connecting them with neighboring individuals and organizations to create vibrant communities of mutual support.

Blue Star Families believes we are all stronger when we take care of one another. Military family life presents unique challenges. Blue Star Families offers programs to help military families overcome the isolation and alienation of frequent moves, deployments, and reduced support from the government.

“We are very excited to be supporting Blue Star Families, Blue Star Outdoors program. This program brings together two things that Vista Outdoor is passionate about: supporting our men and women serving in the military and the healing powers of the great outdoors,” said Andrew Keegan, Vice President of Corporate FP&A and Treasury. “The families of our military service members go through a lot, and I believe there is no better way to find peace of mind and rejuvenate the soul than to explore the outdoors. That is exactly what this program accomplishes.”

To empower families to thrive as they serve. Blue Star Families is committed to strengthening military families by connecting them with their neighbors to create vibrant communities of mutual support.

The Blue Star Outdoors program offers engaging and enriching outdoor activities at our nation’s neighborhood and national parks. Outdoor experiences provide the places for families to seek respite, explore nature, and experience joy. This program empowers members of Blue Star Families to experience tranquility, community, opportunity, and belonging in outdoor spaces everywhere.

Grant Power:
“The grant from Vista Outdoor helps provide valuable programming for military families including our ‘Outdoor Explorers for All’ program, which offers families the opportunity to learn to fish at a national park near them at no cost,” Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO Blue Star Families. “Time in the outdoors is beneficial to mental wellbeing and thanks to our partnership with Vista Outdoor, we can continue to provide military families with fun outdoor experiences to help them thrive.”
